Hi,
I'm a newbie from Malaysia.

I would like to seek some advise from member her please.

I bought my P1510 some 4 years ago. Its a 30gb and 1gb Ram (a recent upgrade). I bought it on an impulse because I was in awe of the touch screen and its portability without realising the two OS options. Mine is running XP Pro. Since seeing models running Tablet edition, I always felt left out. Needless to say I've tried everything trying to change the OS until I was told its not possible due to it having a different BIOS. But I do love my P1510D.

Recently I bought a HP TC1100 and am having great fun with the hand-writing recognition programme. Its a great laptop despite being bigger in size and heavier to carry around.I suppose I got so used to my P1510D being light-weight and compact. I am considering installing Windows 7 for the pen enabled programme.

So, my question is since my P1510D is running on XP Pro and was told it has a different BIOS to the tablet edition, will installing Windows 7 allow me to have a hand-writing recognition programme? I also read in this forum I would not have Aero, which I'm ok with. Are there pitfalls that I should avoid when changing the OS? I've downloaded Windows 7 upgrade advisor. It says ok to change.

I would be pleased for any help on this.

Thank you

Hmm different BIOS sounds awkward... where did you find that info??

W7 should be fine, except it will eat about 10 of your 30GB HDD space just for itself, and 1GB RAM is pretty tight so don't expect blazing performance...

Thank you for the reply.

I think I googled it. Didn't some top notch in Fujitsu claimed when launching the 2 different OS on the machine he was relieved that the internal component didn't need changing, only the BIOS? I may have mis-read. I'm afraid I'm not tech savvy.

I did plan on upgrading to a 2gb stick till I found out the price on Ebay, a whopping USD180!!! I'm wondering if its worth spending that amount? My thinking is if I change the OS at least it will stay with me even if the P1510D does not.

Thanks again

I highly doubt that the BIOS would be the limiting factor in installing OSes. The older hardware, on the other hand, will often render newer OSes slow and lacking in feathures. Since the win 7 upgrade adviser said ok, I'd go for it. Make sure to backup any needed files as there is no official upgrade path from xp to win 7.
RAM upgrade is definitely good if you can afford it (win 7 pro on my P1620 uses nearly 800 MB of RAM after startup).

Thanks TSOG

I would be equally as happy if I am able to install Tablet Edition OS if it just means getting the OS software and the license for it. There is a seller on Ebay selling a battery cover together with COA for a fujitsu P1510. I am sure I would be able to get a copy of the Tablet OS software from somewhere.

Would that be the solution since the purpose of getting Win 7 is only for hand-writing recognition?

I use my P1510D for surfing the net at Starbucks and other hotspots. I don't store vital information for fear of losing or having the laptop stolen.

As far as spending USD180 for a 2bg memory stick, I think I'd rather buy another P1510/P1610 or even a P1620 running the Tablet OS.

Thanks again

I "upgraded" to win 7 pro from xp tablet and haven't looked back. Win 7 boots and shuts down much faster than xp tablet, and the built-in on screen keyboard is much better too.
1 gb could be fine if you use page file, though I saw 2gb modules for P1610/P1620 for $100 on ebay from third party sellers. Not sure if it is compatible.
Or you could buy an xp tablet recovery cd from fujitsu. That's what I did right after I bought my P1620 off ebay.
